Artist Statement
As a painter, I pursue narrative and the body. My visual focus is dynamic life-size figures and the patterns of light play and color. The paintings are rendered with sensual textures and lavish warm colors that are formal and contemporary. I seek to capture an essence of personality in the facial expression, gesture of the body and the hands. I resist the reiteration of the dominant cultural ideal of the body as consumer project and want the viewer to identify with them as ordinary people with common bodies. I use large-scale canvases in order to confront and guide the viewer into a place of inquiry and/or identification with the subject. Each figure becomes a source of new information or paraphrase of text or archetype within each of us.
